Project Description:

Reverse Engineering & 3D Scanning for the medical sector was another first for us. We were approached by another long term client who in turn had been approached by one of their clients requesting a Reverse Engineering process that could recreate a set of cannulated medical taps.

It appeared that a number of Orthopaedic surgeons had favoured this piece of kit and as a consequence the demand for it to be reproduced due to wear and tear was causing the supplier issues. The set consisted of 4 taps with other associated parts, however the taps were no longer produced & no legacy data existed, not even a drawing. The tap sizes ranged from 6mm – 10mm diameter & approx 20mm in length.

We decided that in order to capture suitably accurate date, we would need to Macro 3D Scan the taps. We scanned the taps & then began the Reverse Engineering procedure. Whilst doing this we found a couple of anomalies on each tap and working with the client determined a suitable way forward.

We sectioned the scans in Solidworks 2017 and created the geometry and 2D Drawings. We also designed a new stainless equipment box for the taps and associated parts. The test parts were manufactured and then after testing was complete the parts went into full production.
