Project Description:

3D Scanning an HGV chassis is not something we had undertaken previously. So when we were approached, it was an interesting challenge to say the least. The client had tried a couple of companies previously but unfortunately their equipment was not suitable for the application. However, we were confident that we had the perfect scanner for the project, the Atlascan 3D Laser Scanner from ZG Technology.

The customer sent us some information regarding the project. The chassis was approximately 9.5 metres long and the 3d scan was needed in order for the customer to design and retrofit a 10 ton winch on the vehicle. Previous projects involved manual measuring and entailed days & weeks of measuring etc in order to find a suitable path for the winch cable.

We visited site to carry our some sample 3d scanning & evaluate the data. It was clear that a significant number of 3d scanning targets would be required and would take a couple of hours to add them. We provisioned 2 days to complete the 3d scanning onsite.

On completion of the 3D Scanning, we ended up with approximately 2 terabytes of data. On return to the office we decimated the data to make it more manageable for the client.

On completion of the project, the client estimated that our 3d scanning services had saved them an estimated 6 weeks in development time.
