Project Description:

We were contacted by one of the UK’s largest food manufacturers, asking if it would be possible for us to carry out a site visit to review a potential 3D Scanning & Reverse Engineering project.

On reviewing the parts & the requirements it was clear that the 3D Scanning, was a pretty straight forward job for the Atlascan 3D Laser Scanner. but we knew the Reverse Engineering would need further investigation as the external thread was something we’d never come across before and it was explained to us that it was a “rope thread”

However, the internal thread  was another matter as we could not scan it due to the line of site. Scanners only work on line of sight and the only way of capturing the thread from a 3D scanning point of view would be to CT Scan the part which would have pushed the project cost way over budget. Consequently we asked the client for further support and fortunately they were able to track down a drawing for the common shank interface that fits inside. It was determined that it was an Acme thread, again, something we had never come across before.

Using the drawing we were able to Reverse Engineer the internal thread onto the part and carry out a complete deviation check on each of the shanks.

Once we had completed the Reverse Engineering & Drawings we submitted them to the client for approval. The machining results speak for themselves.  A great team effort by all involved!
