3D Scanning - Transit Van

Client:

Not available due to NDA

Project Name:

Transit Van Internal 3D Scan

3D Scanning Used:

3D Macro Scanning

Project Description:

3D Scanning the internal envelope of a transit van was something we hadn’t done before. We were approached by a client who wanted to launch a new service fitting out vans such as the Ford Transit with equipment racking/workspace etc. It was an interesting project and we quickly realised that the floor protector being made from plastic could potentially cause problems with our 3D Scanning process due to the 3D Scanning Technician needing to be inside the van.

After doing a couple of trials we found that the movement in the floor was as predicted creating noise on the scan. So our approach was to scan the van in 5 stages and then merge the scans at the end of the process.

The merging of the scans created a root mean square deviation of 78 microns which the client was more than happy with. The client was supplied with an STL file in order for them to do the design work in-house.

The scanner we used for the project was the Atlascan 3D Laser Scanner.
