3D Scanning & Reverse Engineering Frequently Asked Questions

What Type Of 3D Scanners Do You Use?

We use three types of 3D Scanner, white light, blue laser scanners & Macro.

What Is 3D Scanning?

3D Scanning is the process of analysing a real world object or environment to collect data on its shape/form and possibly it’s appearance.

Do You Provide Onsite 3D Scanning?

Yes we do provide onsite scanning services. However there would obviously be a price difference between you sending your parts to us and us travelling to site & potential overnight expenses etc. Please contact us to clarify and additional queries you may have.

Can I just Use The 3D Scanning Service & Arrange My Own Reverse Engineering?

Yes you can use either, or both services. Obviously we cannot be responsible for the accuracy of external scan data but will provide you with a scan to cad deviation report.

What CAD Packages Do Your Reverse Engineering Services Cover & What Format Can You Supply The 3D CAD Data In?

We are able to produce data in a variety of formats including Step,STL, IGES, Solidworks, Creo, & Catia. We can also produce 2D detailed manufacturing drawings for your reverse engineered parts as well.

What Size Envelope Are You Able To 3D Scan?

We can scan parts as small as 25mm through to something as large as a LWB (Large Wheel Base) Van or a locomotive chassis (we have already completed a narrow gauge chassis measuring 5 metres long).
However, we tend to find each project is unique as it’s rarely the case that two customers want the same data.

What Does The Term 3D Scan Mean?

A 3D Scan is a digital/electronic file of the information collected by the 3D Scanner in the form of a mesh or point cloud.

What Is A 3D Print?

A 3D Print is a three-dimensional object created using additive manufacturing process either from cad or 3D scanned data.

Can You 3D Print Directly From A 3D Scan?

Sometimes it’s possible to create watertight data from the raw scan data,  but usually there will be a requirement to carry out post processing to clean and make the data what’s known as watertight. so the printing software can process the model and calculate material & support material.

How Long Do I Have To Wait For My Project To Be Processed/Completed?

This will depend on our current workload. So we will normally give you an approximate completion date but this can change when circumstances are outside of our control. We will endeavour to keep you informed should a problem arise. We do not give hourly updates etc as we simply do not have the time.

Pricing & VAT

Our prices are fixed and non negotiable. We will give you a fixed price to complete the job including VAT. Unfortunately due to a number of requests we have to clearly state………..Please DO NOT ask us to carry out work for cash in hand! We are a VAT registered company and have no intention of committing VAT fraud for anyone!

If you do not wish to pay VAT then please contact alternative suppliers who are not VAT registered!!

Shipping Costs

When you ship your part to us please ensure you include pre-paid return shipping labels covering the weight on the item. Failure to do this will result in additional costs.
